Award-winning writer Carmen Agra Deedy spins stories and reads from her book The Rooster who Would Not Be Quiet.
Deedys memories of her childhood have been collected in the volume Growing Up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia. She has told stories at the Kennedy Center, The National Book Festival, TED and on National Public Radio. In 2001, she was presented with the Jane Addams Peace Association Book Award (Honor) by Mrs. Kofi Annan at the United Nations for her book The Yellow Star. The Hiawassee Branch began as a bookmobile station in 1962 and was first known as the Pine Hills Library. In later moves the branch became the West Colonial branch and in March 2000, Hiawassee. In early 2010, the Hiawassee Branch moved to a new home near the corner of Hiawassee Road and West Colonial Drive in the Highland Lakes shopping plaza.
